Tri County Painting Painters in Riverside CA
Jon Premo (CEO)
It can be a daunting task when it comes to hiring a paint contractor. You have to schedule appointments, they show up late, why their truck broke down and more... You will get all different sets of opinions and prices. One person says hire them and the other says never. We understand all the obstacles you go through; I do the same thing when hiring or looking for a contractor to perform work at our office or building.
What I noticed over my 30 years in business is most people have 2 things there looking for, price budget and qualifications. Sometimes that is not enough to consider. I really would ask yourself a few serious questions when talking with painters.
These are my 7 major TIPs when I am looking for a contractor and it works well every time to decide the best fit for your specific project.
Do you like the person, does he or she answer all your questions, do they seem genuine or more like a car salesman, trying to over sell you the job. Red flag.
Are they humble and really enjoy what they do? I ask contractors this all the time and then watch their expressions. You will tell if they are being genuine with the answer. It's important to have contentment, then you can rely on them doing a quality job instead of just for the paycheck.
How long have they been in business and check there licensing to make sure they are holding the certs and insurance in their name. See if they have been in any claims, or worker comp cases, etc. Accident sometimes happens, but if they have a repeated strikes that's a red flag for me.
Ask time frames, I can't tell you how many contractors will tell you a few days and they take triple that. Make sure they understand you do not want them to just drop off a guy or two and never see them. Everyone who has ever hired Tri County Painting knows, there will be an owner and supervisor on that job every day. This ensures quality and deadlines are being met.
Are they explaining products. There are specific products we use for different surfaces; we specify all products on the job walk and the proposal.
Are they explaining procedures. I feel it's very important for you to understand the exact procedures, this will justify costs, time frames and labor force and you will be able to compare to other bids. Most of the time people will want the cheapest price, but there will be a reason. Find out that reason and compare apples to apples for your best decision. Also, make sure they are adhering to the proposal or contract, so you get the most longevity out of your investment.
Ask to see their previous work, have them send you addresses and dates of previous projects so you can drive by and see their work in person. Makes a huge difference and it will separate the real painters from someone who may not be as established.
To sum it all up- every painter is trying to land the job, some jobs they may not excel at, so they take on a project at the wrong price or too little experience and that doesn't help anyone, especially you. Follow these steps and you will find out quickly who is qualified and who might not be a good fit.
